A 1946 waterfront home that lives on one easy level: the rooms everyone gathers in (the sunroom, the living room, the bar, the home theater, and the kitchen) all open into one another downstairs, and every one looks at the water. The three bedrooms are just above and beside them; outside there is the porch, the lawn, the dock, and the rooftop deck.

The home is clearly a treasured family estate. The owners have carefully blended mid-century modern characteristics with all of the contemporary conveniences renters expect.
Built by hand
A lot of what you notice here the owner made himself: the copper range hood with its hand-poured pewter arch, the fossil bar, the copper kick plate on the front door, and the cast-copper egret that became the house's mark. Each one came with a good deal of trial, error, and molten metal in the driveway. Read how they were built →
A little family history
People often ask about the house and the family. Under the coffee table on the porch there is an album our daughter put together for a high-school history project. It grew into a family undertaking, and the story in it is the American one: struggle, hard work, and eventually success. I would have loved to meet some of these people. You are welcome to look through it.
