The House

A 1946 waterfront home that naturally fits into the landscape. The rooms everyone gathers in (the sunroom, the living room, the bar, the home theater, and the kitchen) all open into one another downstairs, and every one looks at the water. Two comfortable bedrooms and a bathroom are upstairs and the large master bedrooms on the first floor. The downstairs bath, freshly renovated, is steps from both the master and the sunroom; you can see it with the bedrooms. Outside there is the porch, the lawn, the dock, the rooftop deck, and lots of wildlife.

Built by hand

A lot of what you notice in this house I made myself. The bar is an eighteen-month piece I call "Time without Borders": hand-poured pewter and a walnut slab set with fossils and gemstones, turquoise and malachite and dinosaur bone, under lit resin. The copper range hood in the kitchen carries an arch of pewter I melted and poured in the driveway. The kick plate on the front door is three copper sailboats on a sea of patina I raised with, of all things, Miracle-Gro and vinegar. The walnut island got a turquoise inlay. A little family history

People often ask about the house and the family. Under the coffee table on the porch there is an album our daughter put together for a high-school history project. It grew into a family undertaking, and the story in it is the American one: struggle, hard work, and eventually success. I would have loved to meet some of these people. You are welcome to look through it.
